Emma closed the file, and sat back. She focused for a moment on the way it felt to swing her leg when it was crossed like this. Of course she realized how foolish the thought was. Crossing one’s legs was not an event of any importance. But she never had. Not this way, at least. She didn’t know why. It must have been the kind of clothes she wore before that made her sit like some prim virgin, knees tight together, ankles delicately crossed.

This was better. A lot better. It gave her that surge of power again, the one she’d discovered this morning. She could imagine sitting in. a meeting across from Michael, and swinging her leg like this. He would look, all right. Look to distraction.

She sighed. It was so much easier thinking about tormenting the man than actually dealing with her real problem. She couldn’t forget the facts of what she’d done. It wasn’t his fault she’d been such easy pickings. He’d just plucked her out, and she’d fallen into his palm like ripe fruit.

No, it was simpler to focus on the revenge. It might not be her finest hour, but when it was over, the deep, overwhelming sense of shame would be gone. Wouldn’t it? She prayed it would. And, just as important, she’d be finished obsessing about Michael. Banish him from her thoughts, her dreams. Especially her dreams.

She got her purse and lifted his folder, intending to go over it tonight in a lot more detail. She’d find his Achilles’ heel and she’d use it No mercy. That was her new motto. She’d plan and plot and then when it was all over, she’d be free. She just had to be free.
